Park Opening And Closing Times
The Park is open from Friday morning until 9pm on closing days and from 8. 30am to 4. 30pm on weekends. Gates are closed at 9pm throughout the year, except for concert nights which are advertised separately in the Programme. The entrances to the National Park are situated at the bottom of the valley, before you reach Uig. The park is open 24 hours a day but locked outside office hours. There is no charge for parking within the park boundaries.
Boat

Underground
7. 45am Arrived at Jubilee line at North Greenwich station to take 188 bus to central Greenwich. The bus was due to leave at 7. 13 am but it didn’t leave until 7. 17, which is very bad time management on the bus company’s part as it caused me to miss the last 3 minutes of my slot to see Ed Sheeran’s concert (the tickets were £55 each). 7. 53am We have arrived in central Greenwich went to find William Parry a nice old man who knew John Harrison and his brother James Harrison.
Although William now earlier than expected. It was very well done though and I would recommend anyone to visit as William is full of stories from back then. I'm heading down to Greenwich for the Jubilee line extension to North Greenwich, then the 188 bus to central Greenwich. It's so good to get out of one's daily working environment, whether it be town or country. Pushes you to think about broader issues and gives you a wider perspective on what's going on.
Greenwich a historic place rich with maritime history and one of the fastest growing areas in south east London. Bus
Greenwich (or Greenwich Village as it used to be called) is a great little corner of South East London and is easily reachable by public transport from the city centre. Although Greenwich Market dates back to 1088, the area’s reputation as a major tourist attraction only came about in the 18th century when Sir Christopher Wren opened his observatory in Greenwich Park. London's greatest attraction and perhaps the most pleasant way to get there would be by river.
Greenwich is only a 10-minute ride from London Bridge and the journey is one of the most scenic in London. It's best to take the river bus from Westminster Pier, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Cars
The car parking areas are relatively small, but there is on road parking outside the gate along with free parking at Greenwich Millennium Village. Parking charges are different there, though: 2 per hour; 4 hours maximum; excess charge 80. There is a large car park outside the main gate of Greenwich (there’s a small entrance fee here, but it’s currently free in 2017). There are also a few parking bays on the other side of the road and further down.
Policing The Park
Greenwich Park is a public space, designated as Metropolitan open land, and largely maintained by the Royal Parks Agency. The Royal Parks Police was formed in 1872 as the Royal Parks Constabulary, and was originally formed to stop poaching and vandalism in Hyde Park. In 1965, the police force merged with that of St James's Park to form the Metropolitan Open Land Police. Today the force polices Hampstead Heath, Green Park, Hyde Park, Richmond Park, Bushy Park and Greenwich Park.
In late 2014 all officers at Royal Parks were trained to use Taser guns following a trial period. By 2016 all 31 constables had completed their training and could be routinely armed with Tasers. Greenwich park is policed by the Royal Parks arm of the Metropolitan Police Service. As such, the police officers in the Park have access to a defibrillator and are trained in its use. This is as well as having potential access to London's Air Ambulance.
Should there be an occasion where you dial 999 and the Police should be dispatched within the Royal Parks, PCSOs will respond. In most cases, but not all, such incidents would be dealt with by PCSOs. I’ll tell you about the history of the Park, the various rules, and the ways to contact their police. I’ll also give some tips on safety. Honeypot Lane is one of the few remaining old lanes in the area, with considerable attractive and historical interest.
Geography
In outline the park boundary follows the former course of the River Fleet as it flows southeast from Hampstead towards Holborn. At its southernmost point (at grid reference TQ379737) there is a meander in the river which encloses most of the area now occupied by Farringdon station and the western half of Clerkenwell, including Smithfield meat market. The boundary follows this meander to its northern end then runs straight north-east for about 180 metres to cross from the City of London into Islington.
Here it leaves the meander and turns east, briefly following the modern section of the Fleet (from TQ370755 to TQ382748), South Greenwich Forum (southgreenwichforum.co.uk). It runs east, diagonally across Islington High. Maze Hill station is about 1 km SSW of the north-eastern corner of the park and Erith Marshes lie 1. 5 km east of the southern boundary. The main entrance to the park, and indeed the oldest entrance, is via a carriage drive on its eastern side which is only accessible from Shooters Hill (the A206).
The drive runs through an area of woodland and emerges into open parkland near the centre of the park. At its northern end it joins a second drive which enters from near Bowaters House, on Shooters Hill. This second drive runs for half a mile approximately south-east to north-west with fine views across marshes to Purfleet and across Kent Millennium Place to Bexleyheath. The town of Monmouth occupies the southern part of the park, but to a great extent the boundary between it and the park is imperceptible.
The northern part is entirely rural. The River Wye forms the western boundary of the park, upstream of Chepstow. Here there is an area of woodland and rough grassland called Dinedor Hill, which has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. To the east and south-east lie fields grazed by cattle and horses and beyond them a belt of trees stretching out into the county of Gloucestershire. In these more accessible areas several paths have been created for walkers.
The NNE to SSW orientation is other than ideal for access. It is surrounded by the much higher ground of the Cotswold Hills: here the parish boundary follows the crest line, but at Stonecrop Hill by comparison, it leaves the top of the hill and descends northwards through shallow valley to reach Watership Down, then rises again to Hinchley Wood. The black horse on a white background that lies within a green outline with a red border used to represent South Gloucestershire incorporates a Saxon or Viking sword and shield design based on two finds from nearby Wanborough.
The park is open to the public and is largely surrounded by a 3 metre high rubble wall except on the side of the main entrance from the north. The remaining three sides are bounded by farm land and forestry. It was created in 1985, for the purpose of conserving important surviving remnants of heathland together with other features such as a military gun emplacement, formerly on the beach, with ranges extending into the sea to take advantage of the clear line of sight over a flat coastal landscape.
Royal Observatory
In 1834, King William IV gave permission to the astronomer, Sir James South, to build an observatory on this site. The foundation stone was laid on 28 October 1836 and Sir James South began working in the building in 1838. The Observatory was first used for astronomical research in 1840. It is one of the most complete astronomical observatories in the world, and has been home to some legendary scientists. It should be ranked with other historic British sites such as Oxford University, Greenwich Observatory and Cambridge University.
Sport
Sport in the Royal Borough of Greenwich is governed primarily by the London 2012 Olympic Organising Committee. The competition venues and training camp for the Team GB and ParalympicsGB were based in the Park, which also hosted several major events. Sport has been held in the park since 1886, with the riding events specific to modern pentathlon being held there. The Paralympic events were first held there in 2008. Since 1926 sport has been held without interruption only during the Olympiad.
The equestrian events used a purpose built arena, Greenwich Park Arena, which was erected in the northern part of the park. The International Broadcast Centre was located close by in the O2 arena. The Royal Greenwich Observatory, commonly referred to as the Royal Observatory, is an observatory situated on a hill in Greenwich Park, overlooking the River Thames. The observatory was commissioned in 1675 and completed in 1676. There is so much history surrounding the Greenwich area in which it has been declared a World Heritage Site.
